KRÜGER & PARDELLER
DISTANCING / ATTRACTING OCCUPATIONS, 25.09. - JANUARY 2012

ONE LANGUAGE TRAVELLER

National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen

FOS - ONE LANGUAGE TRAVELLER
WITH KRÜGER & PARDELLER

In a landscape of tent-like rooms sewn from semi-transparent nylon fabric you follow a sequence of set sculptural objects, custom-made "street lamps" and a factory on high ground which produces soaps shaped like the very first "designed” objects, arrowheads and flint axes. The installation is a sensual experience of concepts such as travel, thresholds and transformation of energy and meaning.

One Language Traveller by the Danish artist FOS and the Austrian-Italian artist group Krüger & Pardeller occupies the entire Sculpture Street at the Danish National Gallery. Both are concerned about how our social relationships and physical environment mutually influence each other.

FOS - ONE LANGUAGE TRAVELLER
WITH KRÜGER & PARDELLER

One Language Traveller is a travel through membranes, tents, grids and a strange factory. Here are machines and curiosities, sound and street lamps, warped floors and a mysterious soap production.

The work combines sculpture, design and architecture in an aesthetic and idea-based hybrid form, called "social design." The artists are interested in how our social relations and our physical environment mutually influence each other. The works provide a framework for social opportunities - meetings, activities, experiences and insights. Conversely, the physical space becomes meaningful only through the social activities taking place in it.

A Journey

On your way through One Language Traveller, you constantly encounter evidence and elements that point back to earlier meanings yet forward to upcoming parts and meanings.

In a blue tent, you go over a clay floor and past a clay sculpture shaped like a steep mountain.

In the orange tent space you pass display cases with objects that seem carefully collected according to specific, but unknown criteria.

ONE LANGUAGE TRAVELLER 18.06.2011-20.06.2012 National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen

In the black tent a machine recirculates a ball and dissolves the separation between production and product.

The route takes the traveller through enormous membranes to other areas and through a grid-like structure, with a sign system of symbols.

At the other end of the installation you reencounter a clay mountain landscape. On top of this hill, a factory produces soaps that are shaped like the very first "designed" objects, namely arrowheads and flint axes.

A social space

Art can be an alternative to the systems that normally regulate our behavior and social interaction. This project functions as a complex circuit of material, ideas, objects, symbols, and situations. It forms a strange and complex narrative that constantly springs up, decomposes and transforms, but which also reaches back to earlier stages. In this way, the same elements constantly generate new meanings, which add to the previous meanings in an increasingly bigger and more widespread pattern- like language does. This continued accumulation of communication produces a sharpened awareness of and basis for a different, common social situation. And this reflection is facilitated by one's own physical movement in and out of the installation space. Marianne Torp/Curator

IN ENGLISH

Krueger & Pardeller follow the story of the development and interpretation of objects. The information stored in form, material and aesthetics can resonate a knowledge that is based on the interpretation of our environment and influences our social interactions. Every object is not simply a reflection of our culture, but also has the potential to enable interpretation and action. Its use and evaluation in turn is added to the continual process of cultural production. The potential of art for social interaction and activation can become effective through minimal shifts and disruptions of the constant flow of goods production. That is where questions of our social life condense and become visible.
